Measures of Trust and Coffee
Coffee Shops are the foot-worn neutral ground where many a groundwork is land and relationship made. Sit in one that gets trafficked and you'll spot them – couples, threesomes, groups – all tentatively probing and feeling; establishing the basic foundations from which they will either build something or leave a marker.
DarlingEvil and I are no exception. We know our coffee, our shops and our routine well! Meeting someone(s) to discuss possible future encounter(s) is a dance. Between the two of us we hand off the conversation, ask leading questions, glide into stories and jokes meant to relax the situation. It's a group effort not only for our benefit, but the person(s) on the other end as well.
Coded words, phrases, looks, touches pass between us. If red-flags rise for one the other knows immediately. If the situation is riding well in calm water, we carry on into greater depth.
Our intentions, expectations are set up front with possibilities left open. In the end this is all about fun and growth for all. I don't know that either of us could build trust in a situation with too many restrictions — and I think that plays true for anyone we meet. Yes, we'll provide the needed structure, but picture a forest rather than the frame of a skyscraper.
Then there's the coffee…if that's good? Well, a trip can never be wasted — can it!
