Protocol has taken me some time to gentle my way through. It’s been a journey. At the turning point I decided to research the reasons behind the protocol in this particular way of life.
Q: Why do some organizations make it feel like you’re in the military?
A: Simple – Respect and discipline. You’re in their “house”, you follow their rules and accept them. Besides, it allows a room full of people some silence and a single voice to be heard.
I’ve had friends express some serious dislike of this aspect of protocol. That’s okay. I didn’t either. Over time I stopped listening to the words and began looking at the mechanism behind them – then it made complete sense.
I suggest you discover what protocol exists at your various haunts and learn the “why” behind them. You may well be amazed at the tradition you’ll discover folks!
